Required Abilities, Qualifications and Experience:
- extensive academic training and post graduate coursework in the following areas: students with special needs; assessment/testing theory and practice (Level B); strategies for adapting and modifying curriculum
- knowledge of, and demonstrated application of the Ministry of Education’s current philosophy, teaching practices, and evaluation/assessment/reporting procedures as outlined in the Manual of Policies, Procedures and Guidelines for Special Education Services
- demonstrated understanding of and successful experience in teaching students with moderate to severe intellectual disabilities, autism, chronic health and physical disabilities, and multiple disabilities as defined by the Ministry of Education
- knowledge of and demonstrated experience in the development, implementation and evaluation of IEPs in consultation with the classroom teacher(s), parent(s), student and district personnel
- successful experience as a Resource Teacher at an Elementary, Middle and/or High School Level
- demonstrated ability in working as a Case Manager for students at the school, district, and inter-agency levels
- demonstrated willingness to participate as an integral member of the School Based Team
- demonstrated ability to liaise with classroom teachers to assure that the goals of the IEPs are effectively being implemented and evaluated
- demonstrated experience in effective transition planning from elementary to middle and middle to secondary
- demonstrated leadership role in adapting/modifying curriculum for students with Special Needs
- demonstrated success at working with and coordinating programs/schedules for a team of Educational Assistants
- demonstrated ability to recognize and acknowledge individual student differences and to adjust instructional practices accordingly
- demonstrated organizational, communication and classroom management skills
- demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with students, parents, and colleagues both verbally and in writing
- demonstrated ability & proven experience in teaching social skill groups and functional life skills
- demonstrated ability & proven experience in using technology to support student needs
- demonstrated excellence in the areas of interpersonal skills, communication, and collaboration
- willingness to learn about and participate in Response to Intervention and Instruction processes
- demonstrated ability to use a variety of formative and summative assessments to plan for instruction
- demonstrated excellent classroom management, behavioural management and organizational skills
- commitment to working with staff/parents in an open, accepting manner in order to promote a strong and caring professional learning community focused on student learning and needs
